Boho Records and Rags is a family run business that was created by owners Ingrid, Steve and Anthony back in May 0f 2018 in Santa Clarita.
The two brothers had been in the record selling business at both record shows and online for over 20 years prior to opening the storefront location. They have been lifelong record collecting enthusiasts amassing thousands of vinyl records in their personal collection and decided it was time to start thinning out the herd. Genres such as Soul, Jazz, Rock, Punk, New Wave, Prog, Oldies, etc.
With the expertise of Ingrid (Steve’s wife) they also included Boho and Rock clothing and jewelry to the store. Therefore creating the premise for Boho Records and Rags the storefront.
The original idea was to create a real vintage vinyl record store that we all remember hanging out at when we were young, digging through bins and boxes of old LP, 45 and 78 RPM records looking for that certain treasure.
The store in decorated from Rock concert posters from days gone by and the music policy is a mix of 50’s through to the 1980’s, jewelry and vintage clothing. The walls are decorated with old rock music memorabilia and vintage sealed Beatles, Kiss toys, etc. At the back of the store is a giant antique record store sign that came from a jazz record store from Central Avenue in Los Angeles many years ago. There is also a disco crystal ball that turns above the rack of 45’s. The store also carries vintage audio equipment. Brands such a Technics, Sansui to United Audio.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Our initial first 1 1/2 years had been one of pretty smooth sailing with a tremendous positive response from the community with a strong local following. But like all businesses since the Covid 19 pandemic, we had to close for three months and unfortunately it has taken a while to get reestablished in the area. Each day customers are discovering that we have reopened and with the help of Social Media advertising, we are seeing new customers daily.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Boho Records and Rags story. Tell us more about the business.
We are a close family business and we like to treat our customers as such also. We are so happy to say that we have become close friends with some of our customers in the past 21/2 years. The store has a definite good feeling which we try to promote. We like to take the time to explain to the younger and less experienced and knowledgeable new collectors the difference between label, cover variations, etc. It is so good to see the younger collectors take in all the information intently.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I like to feel we have been a very lucky family. In the early 1970’s we lost our home in a fire at Christmas time. It did not stop us from rebuilding and after such an event, we feel anything is possible. Our mother raised us to think and feel positive from what life throws at you and to help those less fortunate. It is all a learning experience. What does not hurt you will only make you stronger.
We love our customers, so feel free to visit during normal business hours at our vinyl record store location in Newhall, Santa Clarita.
